When I talked to a friend of mine about my new series Growers and Farmers he said: “You should include a cherry grower.” Little did I know, the sight of cherry trees in full boom, is amazing!
Cherry Grower Vernooij
I googled a cherry grower in the Netherlands and found Theo Vernooij. He has sixteen acres of cherry trees in Cothen, a small and cute town near Utrecht. His farm grows over 45 different kinds of cherries! They even organises a cherry festival each year.
On his ground he also has some apple and pear trees. And with some I mean eight acres each. Keeping cherry trees does not mean: letting it grow and wait until the cherries ripen. Nooo! I learned a lot of things from Theo about cherries and about growing trees in general. I aslo learned a lot of technical jargon which I A) dont know to spell and B) dont know how to translate to English…. Like frakking, which means sorting the cherries!
In conclusion: I hope these images give you a little insight in the life of a cherry grower!
Interested in other Farmers and Growers Loes Heerink follows for this project? Check out the project page! Loes is currently in contact with loads more farmers and growers to also include in the project. It takes some time because Loes visits all the participants multiple times throughout the year. But a patient mind, can get pretty far!
